I bought an iStudioLink instrument cable, and I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised. The sound quality is really good considering that it runs directly from the instrument to the computer. Coupled with Garageband for Mac, I can basically simulate any effect pedal that I want, including distortion, phaser, and overdrive.
Now that I can balance levels in Garageband, I can finally record myself playing bass. As an added bonus, I can sync the mixed Garageband audio with video of me playing to prove that I can indeed play an instrument (poorly).
Here's my attempt at "Bloodstains" by Agent Orange and "Switch 625" by Def Leppard.

you dont use a pick! thank god-- it ruins me when i see people playing bass w/ a pick.
